What’s it like living in a city in Australia?

Well, it’s like living in any other city.  It’s kind of like a mix of Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, and LA.  Except the people talk a little differently, there is colored plastic money, and they drive on the other side of the road.  But it’s mainly the same in most other cases.  Those were the major differences.  The people are very nice, and they don’t really like or dislike “Americans” but they know that Americans are not too smart according to what they hear.  Australians get a good laugh when they get an Aussie TV reporter going to the USA to cover an event, and then might happen to interview the locals, and get hilarious answers and questions about Australia.  This are several great examples below..

Clearly the local government in Santa Cruz, CA is smoking something from nature.

The below querries were posted on an Australian Tourism Website and the answers are the actual responses by the website officials, who obviously have a great sense of humour (not to mention a low tolerance threshold for ignorance!)

MAD MEN is back on !

I am still watching a lot of US television, because Aussie TV well, it’s not as interesting for me.  It’s a small country in population, only 20 million, and so there are some good shows, but most of it’s not so great. So thank goodness for the internet.  Cable TV here is also pretty bad.   So I am downloading all of my favorite shows from the USA.  The CAble TV here is mostly UK television, US NEWS, lots of SPORTS, and some good US TV shows, but it’s just not worth paying for in my view.  It’s more effective to just download what I want to watch.

MADMEN  – advertising in 1960′s  http://www.amctv.com/originals/madmen   This has to be my current favorite series.  It’s got the 60′s retro going on, weird 60′s naive thinking about the world.  Crazy Madison Avenue Advertising Office antics. Kitchy clothes, cars, and bars.

HOW’D YOU GET SO RICH  – a new show with Joan Rivers asking that question to unsuspecting shoppers along Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, CA.   Shes funny, and it’s interesting to find out how these people got so rich..  http://www.tvland.com/prime/shows/howd_you_get_so_rich/

Happy 4th of July

It’s not normal that I am not in the USA during it’s own birthday celebrations.   I am still getting to watch American TV though.  It’s the one thing keeping me sane over here.  I particularly like the Cable TV series MAD MEN, it’s about a 1960′s guy who works in an advertising agency.  I like the 60′s genre, and I studied Advertising in College, so it’s all good.

Ace of Cakes is an amazing show too.  Lots of creative ways of solving cake problems. It’s a fun show too. Australia has it’s own set of shows here.  Some are good, but most are pretty bad.  The few that are good are novel and interesting because they are fresh and new.  Otherwise it’s all the same stuff.

We are inundated with Michael Jackson updates about all the crap that’s been published about him. Rupert Murdoch’s media gaunlet hits hard almost every hour with more crap that is made up, or twisted beyond belief.  I am just amazed at what they spin to get our attentions, and then they don’t bother retracting the false stories.   And the main stream media over here eats it up like sorbet between courses.

It’s winter here, and it’s pretty cold all the time.  OK, not like Chicago, but it’s still pretty cold. They just don’t know what a winter coat is here.  And it’s going down to 38′F tonight, so they had better learn quickly.  I guess it’s like the people in Florida, they know about cold weather, it just doesn’t happen that often.

Well, so far, so good.

Thanks for tuning in !

Can you have too much Comedy? I am in overload.

I am very lucky to be in Melbourne Australia during the International Melbourne Comedy Festival.  Wowa whole MONTH OF COMEDY !  April.   It is the part of the “Triple Crown” of Comedy Festivals, it’s one of the top three largest Comedy Festivals in the world.  And surprisingly, the USA is not a part of the Triple Crown.   Edinburgh Festival Fringe, and Montreal’s Just for Laughs Festival are the other two huge Festivals.

I would think that the USA could at least have a Comedy Festival that would be in the top three in the world?  Sorry guys, it’s not.  Aspen and New York are not close. Vegas’s Festival isn’t even considered.

So I have recently seen a lot of Comics here in Melbourne Australia, and none of them from the USA.  There are several acts from the USA, but I would say that the bulk of them would be from the UK.    I will keep you posted !

Just so you can relate, check out this Video of USA comedian ARJ BARKER, he is one of the Festival’s favorites.  Then click to the right to see a lot more awesome Comedy.

People Ask Me About Dobie…

Well, what can I say? He’s Dobie. You expect him to be hot-headed and self centered, and not focused on other people. You expect that. But I thought I was helping him, and in fact I was just feeding his dependency. Who knew? I didn’t at the time.

So here’s what happened;
Dobie and I are no longer working together, you might have heard. He said that I stole money, and that’s about all I could handle from him. After helping him for over 10 years financially, and any way I could, that was the last straw for me.

Most of his friends said I lasted longer as a “business partner” than they gambled I would ! so it’s over, now I am the devil, within a long line of people that tried to help him and are now considered to be Satan’s children. I have never been on this end of the stick before, and in hindsight it’s better than the other end.

I wish him all the best, and I wish he please stop using me as the reason for all of his “woes.” He claims I “stole” everything from him. No one believes it, if they know me. No one.
So why keep making himself look so pathetic all the time? why not start looking up and looking toward the future. It actually works. And it makes life more enjoyable.

Bush Fires Destroy Towns…….

I am phsycially fine, thanks for all the e-mails today of concern.  It was pretty close to where we live, about 30 minutes away, that’s close enough for me.   The scope of what happened on Saturday is only just being realized.  Very dry and hot conditions this summer made the whole area like a huge kindling pile.  One fire became over 28 in a short time.  Very strong winds ensured it had fierce angry strength.  Reports are horrific.  90 foot walls of flames moving 15 to 20 mph.  Devastated anything in it’s path.  There was no time nor warning for most of the victims, it just moved too quickly.  Complete destruction just north of Melbourne. It’s been a tough few days to watch the horror stories being told.

Here is a glimpse of what happened over the weekend.  Newsreports from a helicopter…..

It’s the worst disaster ever, over here.

What side of the Road is the Correct side to drive on?

Well, I have been getting some great questions from friends in the USA, and yes in Australia, the steering wheel of the car is on the Right side, and they drive on the Left side of the road.  So it’s opposite of the USA.   Granted, who knew why?  but it stems from horses.  Why the Americans are on the other side actually stems from the Teamsters.  Read about it below if you are curious.

Here’s a WIKI pedia listing that I found…..
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Right-_and_left-hand_traffic
There are supposedly less accidents driving with traffic flowing on the Left Hand Side (like Australia) apparently because most of people’s eyesight is right dominant.  They can see the oncomming traffic better.  So that makes sense.  Read the WIKI article, it’s interesting why the American’s started driving on the WRONG side of the road.  Who knew?

Oh yeah, everything is in Kilometers, and the weather is in Celcius.  The money is actually made of plastic (a special long lasting paper like polymer.) I guess I will just have to get used to it.

We’re havin’ a heatwave….a tropical heatwave

OK, it’s been hot over here.  The hottest heatwave on record actually.  The numbers soared to 109,107,113,108,  over the last few days, and we are forcasted to get 90 tomorrow, and we are all cheering for that.  Never thought I would ever think 90′F was cool.

Hope your are enjoying your weather where ever you are, remember, on the other side of the world, it’s the opposite.

FYI -

Protection from The latest SUPER VIRUS for PC’s
I had to dig through their website, but this is the latest program from Microsoft  (it’s free)  to protect you from the super virus that is infecting tens of MILLIONS of PCs…. this will install the latest MS MALICIOUS SOFTWARE REMOVAL TOOL and allow you to run a scan immediately.   It is supposed to run automatically, but it sometimes does not.  I had my updates set to “automatically “download, and run, but it has not done this update in JAN yet.  So now I have run it, and supposedly “protected.”

I have no idea what sickos write these malicious programs to destroy our computers, but I got the VONDU bug back in October, and it took weeks to get rid of it, and I lost some data, so protect yourself.

What I am doing this new year ? Watching TV !

OK, despite working on making cool educational websites, and trading foreign currencies on the internet,  I can now watch American TV on the internet !  Gotta love the internet.

I can e-mail all day long, and make websites till the cows come home, but I just got a new cable broadband connection, and it’s really really fast, and the first thing I am doing is watching my favorite US based TV shows (I can’t get these shows over here).  But I can watch snipets of the shows and sometimes full shows on the net.  The major TV netowrks don’t let people from out of the USA to see their TV shows (but I found a way!)   Another great set of shows are on Cable TV.

Turns out I really like the Food Network, on Cable TV.   So shows like Ace of Cakes, http://www.foodnetwork.com/ace-of-cakes/index.html    and most favorite show is Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives…..  http://www.foodnetwork.com/diners-drive-ins-and-dives4/video/index.html

They remind of the places I have always wanted to visit, but never got around to see them, except on this show.  And when I do get to go in person, I will get the reward of eating good food.

Anyway another cool show I just found out about since poking around the internet video world is “WALL STREET WARRIORS”   So, this weekend, I am watching TV from the USA !!!!!
http://www.mojohd.com/mojoseries/wallstreetwarriors/

Oh, it’s Elvis’s birthday week, I will watch the shows from Graceland too !
http://www.elvis.com/   (video is on the bottom right.)
See how the Hotel Peabody made Elvis’s 2008 birthday cake. http://videos.elvis.com/

Hope you are having fun.

Send me cool links to videos of what YOU like to see !
